Exploring the Intersection of Agriculture and Tourism: A Study of Agritourism in Wayanad District

Remya R Nambiar

Agritourism has emerged as a promising avenue to bridge agriculture and tourism, offering rural communities new avenues for economic growth and cultural preservation. Despite its potential, the development of agritourism in Wayanad remains hindered by a lack of empirical research and unclear policy effectiveness. This study explores the economic, social, and environmental impacts of agritourism on farmers in Wayanad, identifies adoption challenges, evaluates government policy effectiveness, and provides recommendations for sustainable practices. A descriptive research design was adopted, targeting a stratified random sample of 200 farmers. Data were collected through a structured Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS, employing descriptive and inferential statistics, including correlation and regression analysis. Results indicate that agritourism fosters economic resilience by buffering farmers against market fluctuations and crop failures while promoting income diversification and the preservation of traditional practices. Even though environmental and cultural sustainability benefits were observed, careful management is required to mitigate unintended negative impacts. The study also highlights the critical role of government policy support, infrastructure, and marketing efforts in enhancing agritourism success, as these factors accounted for over 60% of variance in farmer satisfaction. Future research should explore tourists' expectations and satisfaction to design more appealing agritourism experiences, further contributing to the growth of this sector. This study underscores the transformative potential of agritourism in revitalizing rural economies, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering sustainable development in Wayanad. This study does not extend to evaluating agritourism from the tourists' perspective or its broader impact on regional tourism.
