China’s Strategic Engagement in Taliban-Led Afghanistan: Implications for China’s Regional Hegemony

Muhammad Haroon Jabarkhil & Margie Parikh

This paper explores China's strategic engagement in Taliban-led Afghanistan, analyzing the implications for China's regional hegemony. Following the U.S. withdrawal in August 2021, China has intensified its focus on Afghanistan, aiming to secure economic interests and enhance its geopolitical influence in Central and South Asia. Through infrastructure investments, particularly under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China seeks to transform Afghanistan into a vital link between East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The Wakhan Corridor and potential participation in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) further illustrate China's commitment to regional connectivity. China's engagement is shaped by its need for stability in Afghanistan to protect its national security interests, especially in Xinjiang, while also countering the influence of other powers like India and the U.S. Despite a cautious approach due to security concerns, China's investments aim to revitalize Afghanistan's economy and secure access to valuable natural resources. The paper concludes that China's strategic involvement in Afghanistan not only aims to bolster its own regional dominance but also significantly impacts the geopolitical landscape of Central Asia and beyond, fostering competition with other powers while reinforcing its role as a key regional player.
